# No Hurricanes Yet Does Not Mean No Hurricanes Coming

I keep seeing people talking about how, so far in 2026, there hasn't been a hurricane in the Atlantic hurricane season.

And yes, that is an interesting fact.

But I think there is a bigger point that gets lost when we focus too much on it: **weather is unpredictable.**

Just because there hasn't been a hurricane yet does not mean there won't be one.

A hurricane season doesn't have to start with a hurricane in order for one to eventually develop. Conditions can change. Atmospheric patterns can shift. Ocean temperatures can change. A storm can develop when people weren't expecting one.

And that is exactly why I think we should be careful about getting too comfortable simply because the Atlantic has been quiet so far.

Because the danger isn't just the storm itself.

The danger can also be **being caught unprepared because we convinced ourselves there wasn't going to be a storm.**

If people stop paying attention because there hasn't been a hurricane yet, then a storm eventually forming could catch communities off guard. People might not have supplies ready. They might not have reviewed evacuation plans. They might not be paying attention to forecasts or emergency alerts.

That's why preparedness shouldn't depend on whether we've already seen a hurricane this season.

You don't prepare because you know a hurricane is coming.

You prepare because **you don't know whether one is coming.**

And honestly, that's one of the strangest things about weather. We want certainty. We want to look at what has happened so far and assume that what happens next will follow the same pattern.

But nature doesn't work that way.

A quiet start can remain quiet.

Or things can change.

And if things do change, I'd rather people have been paying attention than assuming that the lack of hurricanes so far means they're in the clear.

So yes, we can acknowledge that the Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet so far.

But let's not turn that observation into a prediction.

**No hurricane yet does not mean no hurricane later.**

Keep watching the forecasts. Know what your local emergency plans are. Have basic supplies available. And don't wait until a storm is already approaching to start taking hurricane preparedness seriously.

Sometimes the most important part of preparedness is simply remembering that **we don't know what the weather is going to do next.**
